Everyday plumbing in Ilkeston

Most of the plumbing work in a town like Ilkeston is small but it matters: a drip that has stained the ceiling, a toilet cistern that hisses all night, a kitchen sink that drains slower every week. Left alone, small leaks waste water and money, and water can travel along a joist or pipe before it shows, so the damp patch is not always where the fault is.

We book these jobs in rather than running an emergency call-out service, so send us a photo first. It often tells us which part is needed, which means the repair can be done in one visit.

Jobs we’re often asked to do

  • Dripping taps

Usually a worn washer or, on a lever tap, a ceramic cartridge. Both are replaceable, though on an old tap it can be better value to fit a new one.

  • Toilets that keep running

Water trickling into the pan means the flush valve isn’t sealing, or the fill valve isn’t shutting off. A new valve stops the waste.

  • Leaks at pipe joints

Compression fittings loosen and old soldered joints corrode. A weeping joint under a sink or behind a bath panel is quick to fix before it rots the boards.

  • Blocked sinks and toilets

Grease, food and hair in kitchens and basins; too much paper in toilets. We clear the blockage and check the trap and waste so it doesn’t come straight back.

  • Low water pressure

Sometimes a stop tap that is only part open, sometimes scale or an old narrow supply pipe. If neighbours are affected too, the cause may be in the water main.

  • Outside taps

A tap on an outside wall needs an inside isolating valve so it can be turned off and drained before a hard frost. We fit both.

Whose pipe is it?

When something goes wrong underground, the first question is who is responsible for fixing it. Ilkeston is supplied by Severn Trent, and the dividing lines are clearer than most people think.

  • Water supply

Severn Trent looks after the main and the pipe up to your property boundary, where there is usually an underground stop tap. From that stop tap into the house, the supply pipe is normally the owner’s.

  • Drains and sewers

A drain that serves only your property, inside your boundary, is yours. Since 1 October 2011, shared drains, private sewers and lateral drains outside the boundary have been Severn Trent’s.

  • Terraced streets

Many of Ilkeston’s terraces share a drain behind the houses. If a blockage is backing up into more than one property, it may well be a shared drain, so check with Severn Trent before paying for the work.

  • Your inside stop tap

Find it before you need it. It is usually under the kitchen sink, sometimes under the stairs or beneath a floor hatch. Turning it off quickly is the best way to limit the damage from a leak.

Heating in Ilkeston homes

Our engineers carry out annual boiler servicing, boiler repairs and replacement boiler installations, along with central heating work, power flushing and smart controls. If a radiator stays cold at the bottom, or the boiler pressure keeps falling, a photo of the boiler and its pressure gauge is a good place to start.

When a repair becomes a new room

Sometimes the leak is the last straw for a tired bathroom. Our bathroom team fits complete bathrooms, walk-in showers and wet rooms, like this level-access room we finished in Willington for a customer who needed easier access.

Ilkeston’s terraces often have a long waste run to the stack, which we check before a layout is agreed.

Local know-how: Ilkeston and its water

  • Bath Street’s baths

Bath Street was Town Street until a mineral spring was found around 1829. Samuel and Thomas Potter built baths on its west side, opposite the town station, and the street took their name. The baths were demolished in 1899.

  • A canal at the bottom of the hill

The Erewash Canal was navigable from Trent Lock to Ilkeston Common by April 1779 and finished that December: 11¾ miles and 14 broad locks, several of them first named after Ilkeston.

  • Trains again, at last

Ilkeston was once thought the largest town in England with a passenger line running through it but no station. The new station opened on 2 April 2017, on the site of the old Ilkeston Junction.

Plumbing questions from Ilkeston

Do you come out for small jobs like a dripping tap?

Yes. Small jobs are a big part of what we do. Send a photo first if you can, so we know which parts to bring and can finish in one visit.

My drain is blocked. Is it mine or Severn Trent’s?

If the drain serves only your home and the blockage is inside your boundary, it is usually yours. If it is in a drain shared with neighbours, or outside your boundary, it is usually Severn Trent’s responsibility, and they should be your first call.

Why has my water pressure dropped?

Check the inside stop tap is fully open, and ask a neighbour whether theirs has dropped too. If it is only your house, the cause may be scale, a failing valve or an old supply pipe, which we can trace. If the whole street is affected, contact Severn Trent.

Do you offer emergency call-outs?

No. We book jobs in during our working hours, Monday to Saturday from 7:30am to 6pm. If you smell gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. For a serious leak, turn off your stop tap and then contact us.
