Making the most of an Ilkeston bathroom
A lot of Ilkeston’s housing is terraced, built when the town’s pits, ironworks and hosiery mills were busy, and many of those homes had their bathroom fitted long after they were built. That usually means a compact room, sometimes over the kitchen at the back, with the soil stack on an outside wall and not much space to play with.
Small rooms reward careful planning more than big budgets. Swapping a bath for a walk-in shower, choosing a wall-hung vanity to free up floor, and building storage into the wall rather than hanging it on can make a narrow bathroom feel twice the size. Our plumbers, electricians and tilers plan it together, so the pipework, lighting and tiling all suit the layout.

Level-access wet room, Willington

Three bathrooms, one walkthrough
If you want to see the finish we work to, Liam Taylor, who runs our projects, walks through three bathrooms we fitted in one Derby house: ceiling LED strips, a lit shower niche, wall-hung vanity units and a wall-hung toilet.
None of those rooms is large, and that’s the point. Good lighting and fittings that sit off the floor make a compact bathroom feel open, which is exactly the problem most Ilkeston terraces start with.

Ideas for a smaller bathroom
-
Shower instead of bath
A walk-in shower with a single glass screen takes less floor than a bath and leaves the room clear. A low-profile tray keeps the step to a minimum.

Furniture off the floor
Wall-hung vanity units and toilets show more floor, which makes the room look bigger and is easier to clean. They need solid fixings, which we build in before the walls are finished.
-
Storage in the wall
Recessed, tiled shelves give you somewhere for bottles without a cabinet sticking out. They are formed when the walls are boarded, so decide early.
-
Light that does the work
Downlights, a backlit mirror and a lit niche brighten a small room far more than one ceiling fitting. Our electricians fit and certify it all.
-
Boards or large tiles
Fewer grout lines make a small room look calmer. Waterproof wall boards or large-format tiles both do the job.
-
Warm floor, no radiator
Electric underfloor heating frees the wall a radiator would take, which can be the space a vanity unit needs.

Complete bathrooms we fit usually come in between £5,000 and £18,000, with most compact rooms towards the lower half. Our Derby bathroom fitters page has the price bands, and the bathroom design guide breaks the cost down item by item.
Local know-how: Ilkeston
- A fair older than most towns
Henry III granted Ilkeston its charter for a fair in 1252. The Charter Fair still fills the streets every October and is one of the largest street fairs in Europe.
- Fair week means closed roads
From the Tuesday before the fair, Bath Street, Market Place, South Street, Market Street and several other roads close, which is worth knowing if your new bathroom is due in late October.
- An iron giant over the Erewash
Bennerley Viaduct, finished in 1877, carries a walkway 18 metres above the Erewash valley between Ilkeston and Awsworth. It is one of only two wrought-iron viaducts left in England.
- Built for work
The terraces that ring the town centre went up for the families who worked its pits, ironworks and hosiery mills, which is why so many bathrooms here started life as a later addition.

Ilkeston bathroom questions
Can a walk-in shower fit in a small terraced bathroom?
Usually, yes. A walk-in shower often needs less floor than the bath it replaces. The things we check are where the waste can run to the soil stack and whether the floor will take a low-profile tray, both at the free survey.
Is a wet room a good idea in a small bathroom?
It can be. With no tray or screen the room reads as one space, but everything in it will get splashed, so the whole floor and the lower walls are waterproofed. We also have a page on wet rooms in Ilkeston with more detail.
Will you need to move the soil stack?
Rarely. Most layouts can be planned around where it is now. Moving it adds cost and sometimes needs approval, so we only suggest it when the layout really benefits.
How long will we be without a bathroom?
A standard bathroom takes 7 to 10 working days. We tell you at quote stage which days the toilet will be out of action, so you can plan around them.
What happens at the free survey?
We measure the room, check the water pressure and the waste route, look at the walls and floor, and talk through the layout and finishes you have in mind. The quote follows from that.
Can I spread the cost?
Finance can be arranged, subject to status, through Ideal4Finance, who are a credit broker and not a lender. Details are on our finance options page.
