Bathrooms, en-suites and wet rooms
Liam Taylor runs our projects. In this short film he walks through three bathrooms we fitted in a single Derby home, each with its own layout and finish.
A bathroom is where our plumbing and heating work and the rest of the group meet. Before anything is ordered we check where the water supply comes in and where the waste has to go, because moving a toilet or basin can mean lowering a floor or running pipes through joists to keep the fall right. We set out the options, with the pros and cons of each, and price the one you choose.

- We size it to the house
A bigger boiler is not a better one if it never runs at its most efficient. We ask how many people live there, how many bathrooms there are and how you use hot water, then recommend what fits.
- We’ll say when a repair isn’t worth it
If a repair will keep an older boiler going for a fair price, we do it. If the money would be better put towards a replacement, we tell you before the work starts.
- We show you how to use it
After any installation we go through the controls with you and set them up for the way your household lives, so the heating isn’t warming an empty house.

Keeping your heating in good order
- Service every year
An annual service by a Gas Safe engineer keeps most manufacturers’ warranties valid, and it is the best chance to catch a worn part before it fails in January.
- Mind the filter
A magnetic filter such as a MagnaClean catches the sludge that circulates round the system. It only works if it is cleaned, which we do as part of the service.
- New to an older house?
If you don’t know when the radiators were last flushed, cold patches at the bottom are a sign that sludge has settled. A power flush clears it and protects the boiler.
- Controls on an existing boiler
You don’t need a new boiler to have smart heating. Many existing boilers can take smart controls, and changing the heating schedule from your phone saves warming the house while it is empty.
- Before moving a toilet or basin
Waste pipes need a steady fall to the drain. Check the route before you settle on a new layout, because it decides what is simple and what is not.
- Thinking about underfloor heating?
Wet underfloor heating costs more to install than electric but less to run, and tiled floors hold the heat well. We can tell you whether your boiler can feed it.
Questions we’re often asked
What should I look for in a plumber or heating engineer?
Experience of the specific job, proper insurance and, for anything involving a gas boiler or gas pipework, Gas Safe registration, which is a legal requirement. After that, look for someone who explains things plainly and will tell you when an idea isn’t the best long-term option, rather than agreeing to everything to win the work.
What are your most common plumbing jobs?
Leaks, by a distance: dripping taps, weeping pipe joints and toilets that won’t stop running, usually down to worn washers, corroded pipes or a failing connection. Blocked sinks, drains and toilets come next. Both are worth dealing with early, because water from a slow leak can travel some way before it shows, so the damp patch isn’t always where the fault is.
How much does a plumber charge in Derby?
Hourly rates in the area typically run from about £50 to £100. Most of our work is priced by the job rather than by the hour, because materials and the size of the system matter as much as the time: a power flush on a house with twelve radiators takes longer and uses more cleaning fluid than one with six.
How long should a boiler last?
At least ten years if it is serviced every year. Parts such as pumps and valves wear over time, and replacing one can buy an older boiler a few more years. Once repairs start running into hundreds of pounds on a boiler that is already inefficient, a replacement is usually the better spend, and we will say so.
Can you handle a whole bathroom, including the electrics and tiling?
