Keeping a bath in a new bathroom

Walk-in showers get most of the attention, but plenty of households still want a bath: for children, for a long soak, or simply because a family home feels incomplete without one. The good news is that you rarely have to choose. With the right bath, most rooms can have a good shower too.

The choice comes down to the size of the room, how you use it and what the floor will take. These are the options we talk through at the survey.

Bath options for every room

  • Straight bath with a screen

The most space-efficient way to have both. A hinged or fixed glass screen and a good mixer turn the bath into a proper shower.

  • P-shaped or L-shaped shower bath

Wider at the shower end, so there is more room to stand without losing length for bathing.

  • Freestanding bath

A real centrepiece, but it needs space around it and a floor that can take the weight when full. We check the joists first.

  • Steel or acrylic

Enamelled steel is rigid and hard-wearing; acrylic is lighter, warmer to the touch and comes in more shapes.

  • Taps and fillers

Deck-mounted, wall-mounted or floor-standing. Wall-mounted taps need the pipework planned before the wall is boarded.

  • Bath and separate shower

In a larger room, the best of both: a bath for soaking and a walk-in shower for everyday use.

Inside three family bathrooms

Liam Taylor in a Derby family bathroom we fitted

Liam Taylor, who leads our projects, shows three bathrooms we fitted in one Derby house. One of them keeps a bath, with a rainfall head and glass screen above it and a lit niche in the wall beside it.

It is a good illustration of having both in one room: a full-length bath for the children and a proper shower for everyone else.

Our complete bathrooms usually run between about £5,000 and £18,000; a freestanding bath or a separate shower moves a room up that range. See our Derby bathroom fitters page for the bands.

Local know-how: Alfreton and South Normanton

  • Alfred’s farmstead?

Alfreton is first recorded in 1004 as Aelfredingtune, “Alfred’s farmstead”. Tradition links it to King Alfred the Great, though there is no proof it was him.

  • Derbyshire’s coal capital

In the 18th century Alfreton was the chief coal mining centre in Derbyshire and the county’s third-largest town.

  • An unusually large lock-up

The House of Confinement on King Street, a Grade II listed parish lock-up with a stone-slab roof, has cells either side of a central corridor.

  • Where Strutt was born

Jedediah Strutt, the hosier and cotton spinner behind the Belper mills, was born in South Normanton in 1726. Its three collieries closed between 1952 and 1969.

Bath and shower questions

Can I have a bath and a good shower in a small bathroom?

Usually. A shower bath, wider at one end, or a straight bath with a glass screen and a thermostatic mixer gives you both in the space of one.

Is a freestanding bath too heavy for my floor?

Sometimes. A freestanding bath full of water and a person is a lot of weight on one spot. We check the joists and strengthen the floor if it needs it.

Steel or acrylic: which is better?

Both are good. Steel is rigid and very hard-wearing; acrylic is lighter, feels warmer and comes in more shapes. The choice often comes down to the shape you want.

Are shower screens better than curtains?

A good glass screen keeps water in the bath and is easier to keep clean. A curtain is cheaper and suits rooms where the bath is also used for bathing children.

Can you fit a bath I’ve already chosen?

Yes. We check the size, the waste position and the tap holes against the room and the pipework before fitting.
