One family bathroom instead of two small rooms
Plenty of houses in and around Allestree were built with the toilet in its own narrow room beside a small bathroom. It made sense when they were new. Today it usually means two cramped spaces, two doors on the landing and nowhere to put a proper shower.
Taking out the wall between them is one of the most effective changes you can make to a family home. The combined room can take a full-size bath and a separate shower, or a large walk-in shower and a double vanity, and the second door can often be blocked up to give the landing more wall. We plan it as one job: the wall, the floor, the pipework, the electrics and the tiling.
What we check before knocking through
- Stud or solid wall
A stud partition comes out in a day. A solid or load-bearing wall needs a different approach, sometimes a lintel or beam, and we tell you which it is at survey.
- Where the soil stack is
The toilet needs a fall to the stack. Keeping it on the same wall is the simplest option, and moving it is possible but adds cost.
- Which door stays
Blocking one doorway gives the room more usable wall. We plan the layout around the door you keep, so nothing opens onto the toilet.
- Floor and heating
Two old floors rarely line up. We level the new floor as one and decide where the radiator or towel rail goes before the walls are tiled.

Inside three finished bathrooms
In this clip Liam Taylor, our project lead, tours three bathrooms our team completed in a single Derby house, a short drive from Allestree. Look out for the LED strips in the ceiling, the lit niche in the shower wall and the wall-hung vanity units.
A knocked-through bathroom gives you the space for details like these. With the electrician and the tiler on the same team, the lighting is planned into the walls from the start.
A full bathroom from us typically lands somewhere from £5,000 up to £18,000. A knock-through usually sits in the middle of that range because it combines building work with a full bathroom. Our Derby bathroom fitters page has the price bands, and our finance options can spread the cost.
Local know-how: Allestree
- Derby’s biggest open space
Allestree Park covers 320 acres, the largest open space in Derby, with a lake, meadows and woodland. It became a Local Nature Reserve in 2002.
- A hall by James Wyatt
Allestree Hall was built in 1795 to designs by James Wyatt and is Grade II listed. Derby Corporation bought the hall and park in 1947 for £23,000.
- From golf course to meadow
A golf course opened in the park in 1947, grew to eighteen holes in 1955 and closed in 2020.
- A conservation area at its heart
The old village is one of Derby’s 16 conservation areas, so changes to the outside of homes there can need more thought than elsewhere.

Allestree bathroom questions
Can you knock a separate toilet into the bathroom?
Usually, yes. Most walls between a bathroom and a separate WC are stud partitions and come out easily. If yours is solid or carries load, we tell you at survey and include the right support in the quote.
Do I need building regulations approval for a knock-through?
Removing a non-structural partition generally doesn’t. Removing a load-bearing wall does, as do some drainage and electrical changes. We confirm which applies before work starts.
Can I keep a bath and still have a separate shower?
In a combined room there is often space for both. We’ll draw the layout options at the survey so you can see what fits.
What happens to the second door?
It is usually blocked up and plastered on the landing side, giving the bathroom an extra wall for a vanity or a towel rail.
How long does a knock-through take?
Allow a little longer than a straightforward bathroom (normally seven to ten working days) because of the wall removal and making good. Your quote includes a realistic schedule.
