Choosing tiles and flooring
Tiles are the biggest visual choice in a bathroom and one of the biggest costs. They set the colour, the texture and the sense of space, and once they are on the wall they are there for years, so it pays to choose them with the room and the budget in mind.
Our own tilers fit every bathroom we do, so the advice on size, finish and layout comes from the people who will lay them. These are the main things to consider.
What to think about
- Porcelain or ceramic
Porcelain is denser and harder-wearing, and suits floors and wet areas. Ceramic wall tiles are lighter and easier to cut, and fine on walls away from heavy wear.
- Tile size
Large-format tiles mean fewer grout lines and make a small room feel bigger. Small tiles and mosaics suit features and sloping shower floors.
- Grip underfoot
Floor tiles in a bathroom should have a textured or matt finish for grip when wet, especially in a wet room.
- Price per square metre
Good mid-range porcelain is about £25–£35 a square metre; premium stone or designer tiles £60–£100 or more.
Flooring options
-
Porcelain tiles
Hard-wearing, waterproof and easy to clean. The most popular choice, and ideal over underfloor heating.
Underfloor heating -
Vinyl and LVT
Warmer and softer underfoot, quick to lay and a good choice where the budget is tight.
-
Non-slip safety flooring
For wet rooms and accessible bathrooms, where grip matters most.

Large tiles, lit up
Our project lead, Liam Taylor, walks through three bathrooms we fitted in one house in Derby, each tiled in large-format tiles with a lit niche in the shower wall and LED strips in the ceiling.
Large tiles and good lighting work together: fewer joints, more reflected light and a room that feels bigger than it is.
A complete bathroom from us usually costs £5,000 to £18,000; tiles are one of the choices that move it up or down that range. The bands are on our Derby bathroom fitters page.
Local know-how: Long Eaton
- A lace town
By 1907 Long Eaton had almost 1,400 lace machines, and the industry employed more than 4,000 people, a quarter of the town.
- Harrington Mill
Built in 1885, Harrington Mill took one and a quarter million bricks and stretches 167 metres, one of several lace mills still standing.
- On the Erewash Canal
The broad Erewash Canal runs through the town, linking it to the River Trent during its manufacturing years.
- Wagons and sidings
Railway wagon building was another big employer, and the large railway yard at Toton Sidings grew up just north of the town.

Tile and flooring questions
Can you fit tiles I’ve bought myself?
Yes. We can fit tiles you’ve sourced, or help you choose from our suppliers. Let us know the size and quantity so we can check you have enough for cuts and spares.
Are large tiles harder to fit?
They need a flatter wall and floor, so preparation matters more. The reward is fewer grout lines and a cleaner look.
Can tiles go over underfloor heating?
Yes, porcelain and ceramic tiles are ideal over underfloor heating because they conduct heat well.
How much spare tile should I order?
Usually around 10% extra for cuts and breakages, more for complicated layouts or patterned tiles. Keeping a few spares makes future repairs easy.
What colour grout should I use?
A grout close to the tile colour makes the surface look seamless. A slightly darker grout in the shower hides wear better than bright white.
