Getting the lighting and electrics right

Lighting changes how a bathroom feels more than almost anything else, and it is the hardest thing to add afterwards. Downlights, a backlit mirror, a lit niche in the shower and a low glow for night-time all need cables run before the walls are boarded and tiled.

It also has to be safe. Water and electricity share the room, so what goes where is set out in the wiring regulations, and most electrical work in a bathroom has to be notified and certified. Having our own electricians on the job means the lighting design and the safety rules are worked out together, not left to whoever turns up last.

What we plan before the walls go on

  • Zones around water

The space around a bath or shower is divided into zones. Zone 1 runs above the bath or tray up to 2.25 metres, and zone 2 extends 0.6 metres beyond it. Anything electrical inside them must be rated for the water it will see.

  • Layers of light

Downlights for general light, a backlit mirror for faces, a lit niche or strip for atmosphere, and a dim night setting. Each is wired on its own so you can choose.

  • Fans and switches

An extractor that runs on after the light goes off clears steam properly. Switches go outside the room or use a pull cord, depending on what suits the house.

  • Certified work

Work in a bathroom is usually notifiable. Our Part P electricians test everything they install, and you receive the certificate at the end.

See the lighting in action

Liam Taylor shows the lighting in three Derby bathrooms

Liam Taylor, who leads our projects, recorded this walkthrough of three bathrooms we fitted in one Derby house. It is a good showcase of what planned lighting does: LED strips set into the ceiling, a warm-lit niche in the shower wall and backlit mirrors above wall-hung vanities.

None of that is possible once the room is tiled, which is why the conversation about lighting happens at the very first visit.

Our complete bathrooms usually cost from about £5,000 to £18,000; layered lighting is one of the extras that moves a room up that scale. You’ll find the bands on our Derby bathroom fitters page.

Local know-how: Ambergate

  • Toadmoor before Ambergate

Until the early 1800s the area was known as Toadmoor. The name Ambergate came from the tollgate on the Nottingham turnpike and was taken up by the railway for its station.

  • A triangular station

Rebuilt in 1876, Ambergate’s station had platforms on all three sides of a railway triangle, one of only four triangular stations in the UK. Today a single platform serves the Derwent Valley Line.

  • Stephenson’s lime kilns

George Stephenson built limekilns here beside the railway. Eight quickly grew to twenty, fed from Crich quarry by The Steep, a 550-yard incline at 1 in 5.

  • Canal and wireworks

The Cromford Canal, opened in 1794, runs through the village, and in 1876 Richard Johnson and Nephew opened their wireworks by the river.

Bathroom lighting and electrics questions

Can I have a dimmer in the bathroom?

Yes, with the right switch in the right place and lamps that are compatible with dimming. We plan where the switch goes and check the fittings dim smoothly.

Can LED strips go inside a shower niche?

Yes, as long as the strip and its driver are rated for that position and the driver sits safely outside the wet area. That is part of what our electricians design.

Can I have a socket in the bathroom?

A shaver socket, yes. A standard socket is only allowed well away from the bath or shower under current wiring rules, so in most bathrooms a shaver socket is the practical choice.

Do I need an electrician to fit an extractor fan?

Yes. A fan in a bathroom needs a suitable supply and usually a run-on timer or humidity control. Our electricians fit and certify it as part of the job.

Pull cord or a switch outside the room?

Either is safe. Moving to an outside switch means a new cable run in the landing wall, so it is easiest to decide while the bathroom work is happening.
