What to expect while your bathroom is fitted

Most people have never had a bathroom fitted before, and the worry is usually less about the finished room than about the weeks in between. How long will it take, when will the toilet be out of action, and how much mess will there be?

Because our own plumbers, electricians and tilers work in sequence, the job follows a set order with no waiting for other firms. A standard bathroom takes 7 to 10 working days, and we leave the house clean at the end of each one. This is how those days usually run.

How the fitting days run

  1. Protection and strip-out Floors and stairs covered, then the old suite, tiles and flooring removed.
  2. First fix New supply and waste pipework, cables for lights, fan and heating, and any changes to walls.
  3. Boards and waterproofing Walls boarded, recesses formed and the shower area tanked, ready to tile.
  4. Tiling Walls and floor tiled and grouted. This is usually the longest single stage.
  5. Second fix Suite, shower, taps, furniture, lights and towel rail fitted and connected.
  6. Test and hand over Everything tested, sealed and cleaned, with certificates for the electrical work.

What the finished rooms look like

Liam Taylor walks through three finished bathrooms

At the end of all those stages, this is the result. Liam Taylor, who leads our projects, walks through three bathrooms we completed in one Derby house, with ceiling LED strips, a lit shower niche and backlit mirrors.

Every one of those details was fitted in the right order: cables before boards, boards before tiles, tiles before fittings.

Our complete bathrooms usually come to between £5,000 and £18,000, with the bands on our Derby bathroom fitters page and the costs broken down in our design guide.

Local know-how: Melbourne

  • A cathedral in miniature

The parish church of St Michael with St Mary dates from around 1120 and keeps most of its original Norman masonry, which is why it is often called a cathedral in miniature.

  • The original Melbourne

Melbourne Hall gave its name to the Viscounts Melbourne, and through William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, to the city of Melbourne in Australia.

  • Thomas Cook’s birthplace

Thomas Cook, founder of the travel firm, was born in Melbourne in 1808 and later built the Memorial Cottages on High Street in 1890–91.

  • Mills, gardens and boots

Melbourne Pool once served the town’s mill, and the local economy grew on market gardening, framework knitting and footwear.

Questions about the work itself

How long will we be without a bathroom?

A standard bathroom takes 7 to 10 working days. The toilet is only out of action for part of that time, and we tell you at quote stage which days to plan around.

Will there be much dust and mess?

Strip-out is the messiest day. Floors and stairs are covered throughout, the room is kept closed off where possible, and we clear up at the end of each day.

Do we need to be at home?

Someone needs to let us in on the first morning and be around for the handover. In between, you can carry on with your day as normal.

What if you find a problem behind the walls?

Older homes sometimes hide rotten boards or old pipework. If we find something, we stop, show you, and agree any extra work before carrying on.

Who do I talk to during the job?

One person, who knows where every trade is up to. You won’t be passing messages between separate firms.
