Choosing the right shower for your home
A disappointing shower is one of the most common bathroom complaints. Usually nothing is broken: the shower simply doesn’t suit the way the house heats and stores its water. A rainfall head on a gravity-fed system will dribble, and an electric shower on a weak supply will run lukewarm.
So we start at the boiler, not the showroom. At the survey we look at how your hot water is made and stored, test the pressure and flow, and then recommend a shower that will perform. If the heating system itself is the limit, we can deal with that too, because boilers and cylinders are our trade as much as bathrooms.
Which shower suits which system
-
Electric shower
Heats cold mains water as it flows, so it works whatever your boiler. It needs its own high-power circuit from the consumer unit, which our electricians fit and certify.
-
Mixer on a combi boiler
Mains pressure and endless hot water, limited by how much the combi can heat at once. Good for most showers; a very large rainfall head may need a bigger boiler.
-
Mixer on a cylinder and loft tank
Gravity-fed, so the pressure depends on the height of the tank. Often gentle; a shower pump can boost it on this kind of system only.
-
Unvented cylinder
Stored hot water at mains pressure, which is what big rainfall heads and body jets need. A good upgrade when the boiler is being replaced anyway.

Thermostatic control
Whichever type you choose, a thermostatic valve holds the temperature steady when someone runs a tap elsewhere, and protects against scalding.
-
Digital showers
The valve sits out of sight and you control it with a panel or remote, handy in a wet room or for anyone who struggles with taps.

Three finished bathrooms, one tour
In this short film our project lead, Liam Taylor, takes you round three bathrooms we completed in one house in Derby. One has a rainfall head over the bath behind a glass screen, with a lit niche in the wall beside it.
Getting a shower like that right is half plumbing and half design: the right valve on the right system, then tiling and lighting that make it a pleasure to use.
A new shower on its own is a fraction of the cost of a full bathroom. Complete rooms from us run from about £5,000 to £18,000, with the bands set out on our Derby bathroom fitters page.
Local know-how: Borrowash and Ockbrook
- Two villages, one parish
Borrowash and Ockbrook share a single civil parish and almost run into each other, separated mainly by the A52.
- A Moravian settlement
The Moravian Church founded its settlement at Ockbrook in 1750. It is one of only three left in the country, and its chapel and manse are Grade II listed.
- The canal that came through
The Sandiacre line of the Derby Canal opened in 1795 with two locks near Borrowash. A Grade II listed canal bridge still stands between the A6005 and the railway.
- Elvaston on the doorstep
Elvaston Castle, home of the Stanhope family from 1607 for over 400 years, became a country park in 1970. Its famous gardens were shaped by head gardener William Barron.

Shower questions
Why is my shower so weak?
Usually because of the water system rather than the shower. Gravity-fed hot water from a loft tank gives low pressure, and an undersized combi or a partly closed valve can restrict flow. We test pressure and flow at survey to find the cause.
Can I have a rainfall shower with a combi boiler?
Often, yes. A combi gives mains pressure, but it can only heat so much water at once. We check its output against the shower head you like before recommending it.
Can a pump fix a weak shower?
On a gravity-fed system, yes. Pumps shouldn’t be used on a combi boiler or on water straight from the mains, so on those systems the answer is a different valve, a bigger boiler or an unvented cylinder.
Is an electric shower a good choice?
It is reliable and independent of your boiler, so it’s a good backup or a sensible choice where hot water is limited. It needs a dedicated circuit, and the flow is lower than a good mixer.
Can you just replace the shower without redoing the bathroom?
Yes. If the tiling and tray are sound, a new valve and head can go in on their own. If the old valve is buried in the wall, we’ll explain what making good involves before we start.
