A bathroom that’s warm when you step into it
The bathroom is often the coldest room in the house: tiled surfaces, an outside wall, a window and an extractor fan all working against a single small radiator. It is also the room where you spend time with the least on, so a cold one is noticed every morning.
A renovation is the best time to fix it, because the floor is up and the walls are open. As heating engineers as well as bathroom fitters, we look at the whole picture: what heat the room needs, where it should come from, and how to keep it in.
Ways to warm a bathroom
- Heated towel rails
A rail on the central heating warms the room in winter; a dual-fuel rail adds an electric element so towels still dry in summer when the heating is off.
- Electric underfloor heating
Thin mats laid under the tiles, ideal in a renovation because they barely raise the floor. Run on a thermostat and timer so the floor is warm when you get up.
- Wet underfloor heating
Pipes from the boiler under the floor. More work to install, but well suited to larger bathrooms and new extensions.
- Insulate while it’s open
When walls and ceilings are stripped back, adding insulation behind the new boards on an outside wall keeps more of the heat in.
Underfloor heating and towel rails are covered in more detail on our underfloor heating and central heating pages.

A tour of three bathrooms
Liam Taylor, our project lead, recorded this tour of three bathrooms we fitted in one Derby house. Look for the heated towel rail alongside the LED strips in the ceiling, the lit shower niche and the wall-hung furniture.
Warmth and lighting are both decided before the walls are boarded, which is why we plan the heating, the electrics and the tiling together.
Most complete bathrooms we fit fall between £5,000 and £18,000, and underfloor heating is one of the features that moves a room towards the top of that range. The bands are on our Derby bathroom fitters page.
Local know-how: Duffield and Little Eaton
- A keep almost as big as the Tower
Duffield Castle’s Norman keep measured about 31 metres square, only slightly smaller than the White Tower in London. It was destroyed in 1269 after Robert de Ferrers rebelled and lost.
- An early National Trust site
The castle grounds were given to the National Trust in 1899, making it one of the Trust’s earliest archaeological monuments. The foundations are marked out today.
- The Little Eaton Gangway
From 1795, Benjamin Outram’s horse-drawn tramway carried coal four miles down from Denby to the Derby Canal at Little Eaton.
- Containers before containers
The Gangway’s wagons had detachable boxes lifted straight onto the narrowboats, probably the world’s first containerised freight. The last load arrived in July 1908.

Heating and bathroom questions
Electric or wet underfloor heating?
For most bathroom renovations, electric. The mats are thin, quick to fit and don’t involve the boiler. Wet systems suit larger floors and extensions where the floor is being built from scratch.
Can underfloor heating be the only heat in a bathroom?
Sometimes. It depends on the size of the room and how much heat it loses. In a small bathroom with an outside wall, a heated towel rail alongside is usually the better plan.
What is a dual-fuel towel rail?
A rail connected to the central heating with an electric element added. In winter the heating warms it; in summer you switch on the element to dry towels without running the boiler.
Does underfloor heating need certifying?
Yes. Electrical work in a bathroom usually has to be notified. Our Part P electricians fit and test it, and you receive the certificate.
Will a warmer bathroom help with condensation?
It helps. Warmer walls and floors mean less moisture condenses on them. It works best with a properly sized extractor fan vented outside.
