A bathroom that’s easy to keep clean

For busy households, the best bathroom is often the one that takes least looking after. Grout that discolours, corners you can’t reach and screens that streak all add up to cleaning time every week.

Most of that can be designed out. The right surfaces, fittings that sit off the floor and good ventilation make a room that stays looking new with a quick wipe. These are the choices we suggest when low maintenance is the priority.

Choices that cut the cleaning

  • Fewer grout lines

Waterproof wall boards or large-format tiles mean far less grout to scrub. Where tiles are used in the shower, a darker grout hides wear.

  • Furniture off the floor

A wall-hung vanity and toilet leave the floor clear, so it can be mopped in one sweep with nothing to clean around.

  • Rimless toilets

With no rim for dirt to collect under, a rimless pan is quicker and more hygienic to clean.

  • A single glass panel

A fixed walk-in panel has no tracks, runners or seals to collect grime, unlike a sliding enclosure.

  • Built-in storage

Recessed shelves and drawer vanities keep bottles off surfaces, so there is less to move when you clean.

  • Proper ventilation

An extractor that runs on after you leave stops condensation and mould before they start.

Three finished rooms on video

A tour of three Derby bathrooms we fitted

Our project lead Liam Taylor walks through three bathrooms our team fitted in one house in Derby, with wall-hung vanities, a wall-hung toilet and glass shower screens alongside the LED lighting.

Fittings mounted off the floor and large tiles are as practical as they are smart, which is why they appear in so many of the rooms we finish.

A complete bathroom from us is usually somewhere between £5,000 and £18,000, depending on size and finishes. The full bands are on our Derby bathroom fitters page.

Local know-how: Hilton and Etwall

  • From army depot to village

In 1993 a development agreement was signed for Hilton’s former 280-acre Ministry of Defence depot, and several housebuilders went on to build there. The parish, with Marston on Dove, had 8,266 people in 2021.

  • Wakelyn Hall

Hilton’s Wakelyn Hall is a 16th-century half-timbered building, Grade II listed. Legend has it that Mary, Queen of Scots stopped there on the way to her imprisonment.

  • Sir John Port’s legacy

Sir John Port, who died in 1557, left money in his will for almshouses at Etwall and a grammar school “in Etwalle or Reptone”, which became Repton School.

  • The almshouses today

Etwall’s almshouses were rebuilt in 1681: sixteen red-brick cottages round a courtyard, now Grade II* listed.

Low-maintenance bathroom questions

What is the easiest bathroom floor to keep clean?

Large porcelain tiles with narrow grout joints, or a good vinyl, are the easiest. With wall-hung fittings there is nothing standing on the floor to clean around.

Are wall boards as good as tiles?

For upkeep, often better: there are very few joints and no grout. Tiles give more choice of size and pattern. Many people use boards in the shower and tiles elsewhere.

Is a rimless toilet worth it?

If easy cleaning matters, yes. Without a rim there is nowhere for dirt to hide, and the bowl is quicker to wipe.

How do I stop mould in the bathroom?

Get the steam out. A properly sized extractor that runs on after you leave, vented outside, is the main fix, along with sealant and grout in good condition.

Do sliding shower doors need more cleaning?

Usually. The tracks and rollers collect soap and limescale. A single fixed glass panel has nothing but the glass to wipe.
