Choosing your toilet and basin

Swadlincote knows more about toilets than most towns: Sharpe’s Pottery here grew from teapots into toilets and wash basins. Choosing them today is less about the name on the pan and more about how each type fits your room, your pipework and how you use the bathroom.

The toilet and basin decide where the waste pipes go, how much floor is left and how easy the room is to clean. These are the choices we talk through before anything is ordered.

Toilets

  • Close-coupled

The cistern sits on the pan. Simple, reliable and the least expensive, at around £150–£250 fitted.

  • Back-to-wall

The cistern hides in a unit or behind a panel, with only the pan showing. Around £300–£500 fitted.

  • Wall-hung

The pan is fixed to a frame in the wall, leaving the floor clear underneath. Around £400–£700 fitted, and worth it in a small room.

Basins

  • Vanity unit basin

A basin set into a cupboard or drawer unit, giving you storage that hides the pipework.

  • Wall-hung basin

Fixed straight to the wall with the trap on show or behind a short shroud, keeping the floor clear.

  • Cloakroom basin

Compact basins from around 400mm wide, made for small rooms and downstairs toilets.

The prices above come from our bathroom design guide, which compares every type of fitting in more detail.

Wall-hung fittings on film

Three Derby bathrooms with wall-hung fittings

In this clip, Liam Taylor, our project lead, shows three bathrooms we fitted in a Derby house. They include wall-hung vanity units and a wall-hung toilet, alongside LED strips in the ceiling and a lit niche in the shower.

Wall-hung fittings need a frame or solid fixing built into the wall before it is boarded, which is why the choice is made at the design stage.

Complete bathrooms from us are typically £5,000 to £18,000 depending on size and finish. See the bands on our Derby bathroom fitters page.

Local know-how: Swadlincote

  • Sharpe’s Pottery

Thomas Sharpe founded his pottery in Swadlincote in 1821, starting with teapots and pie dishes before the business moved into toilets, urinals and wash basins.

  • Possibly the oldest of its kind

The Grade II listed bottle kiln and workshops are believed to be the oldest surviving sanitary pottery works in the country, and maybe the world.

  • Clay and coal

South Derbyshire’s clay and coal drew potters and industry from the 16th century onwards, bringing prosperity along with heavy marks on the landscape.

  • A town in the forest

Swadlincote now sits within the National Forest, where former industrial land has been replanted with woodland.

Toilet and basin questions

Which toilet is easiest to clean?

A wall-hung pan, because there is nothing on the floor to clean around. A rimless pan makes the bowl itself quicker to clean, whichever style you choose.

Can a wall-hung toilet go on any wall?

It needs a frame fixed into the floor and wall, and room for the cistern behind a false wall or panel. We check the space and the waste position at the survey.

Does a wall-hung toilet take my weight?

Yes. The frames are designed to carry the load into the floor, not just the wall, when they are fitted correctly.

What height should the toilet be?

Standard pans suit most people. Comfort-height pans are a little taller and easier to get on and off, which helps anyone with stiff knees or hips.

Should the basin have storage?

In most bathrooms, yes. A vanity unit hides the pipework and gives you somewhere for everything that would otherwise clutter the surfaces.
